Cut-offs are the minimum marks you need in the Preliminary exam to be eligible for the Mains stage. Let’s look at the General Category cut-off scores for the past three years:

UPSC Exam Pattern Explained Simply
The UPSC Civil Services Exam has three major stages:
1. Preliminary Exam
- This includes two objective papers: General Studies (GS) and CSAT.
- GS is used for ranking; CSAT is qualifying (you need 33% or more).
- It’s held in one day—usually a Sunday.
2. Mains Exam
- This is descriptive and has 9 papers.
- Two are qualifying (English and regional language).
- The other seven include Essay, four GS papers, and two Optional papers.
- The total marks for Mains are 1750.
3. Personality Test (Interview)
- If you clear Mains, you’re called to Delhi for an interview.
- It is conducted by a UPSC panel and carries 275 marks.
- It tests your confidence, personality, and awareness.
Together, Mains and Interview scores (1750 + 275 = 2025 marks) decide your final rank.
UPSC 2025 Exam Dates
It’s important to stay aware of the UPSC calendar. Here are the confirmed dates for 2025:
- Prelims: 25th May 2025
- Mains: Starts 22nd August 2025
If you want to succeed, you should aim to complete the full syllabus by January 2025 and begin serious revision and mock tests from February.
Which Rank Gets IAS, IPS, or IFS?
UPSC gives services like IAS, IPS, IFS, and IRS based on your rank and category. Here’s a rough idea of what ranks are needed (General Category):
Service | Last Rank (Approx.) |
IAS | Up to 90–100 |
IFS | Up to 130–140 |
IPS | Up to 220–230 |
IRS | Up to 260–300 |
Each mark matters. Just 2–3 extra marks can mean the difference between IAS and IRS. That’s why answer writing and interview preparation should never be taken lightly.
